Chapter 16
BEAST
Ezekiel
The next few days seemed to simultaneously drag by and go quickly. Isabelle had taken charge of dealing with press questions about the attack, trying to smooth over the situation the best she could. Since Cole was a child, and the group of Humans had attacked us, she wasnât having much trouble with the law aspect of it. The news stations were another story; the reporters were having a field day with it.
She made arrangements for Cole in a guest bedroom at her house, one closest to her fatherâs lab, and where no prying press eyes could find him. Testing began immediately once he arrived and was set up. I stayed posted by his bedside, and when I wasnât, I was with Raine.
The reporters were stressing me out, and Isabelle seemed concerned that I was on the verge of another agoraphobic attack. She was thankful that Raine was around, keeping my head just above the proverbial water. Every day that passed, tension grew a little more. Isabelle was avoiding me as much as she could because she couldnât find answers, and the stress was getting to us both. I was losing my patience, feeling out of control. Isabelle tried to address me about it, quickly realizing what I needed was space. Curiously, she also started encouraging me to spend more time with Raine, insisting I was more tolerable with her around. She started to save any negative news for when Raine was there, noticing I was able to handle it better.
It was seven days after the accident. The sun had set hours ago, and the lights were dimmed in Coleâs room. The reporters had tapered off and stopped coming around the fifth day. There was a sense of relief when they didnât show up for the second day in a row. The phones were still ringing, however. It was always the same people checking in on Coleâs status, wondering if the little boy would ever wake up. The calls were making Isabelle sick to her stomach so much that she had unplugged the phones in the wing Cole was located in.
I sat in my usual place, right at the edge of Coleâs bedside, my head bowed.
âZeke?â Raine whispered, gently tapping on the door.
Lifting my head, I looked over my shoulder at her. âHey.â I breathed in, feeling like it was my first breath in a while. The tension from the day slowly eased out of my shoulders as Raine moved across the room.
Gently, she brushed the bangs from Coleâs face. âHow is he?â
âNo different,â I whispered. âHeâs jusâ not wakinâ up.â I rubbed my eyes. âI donât understand it... EKG, CT, PET scan, MRI... You name it, I think theyâve done it, and no answers so far.â I looked at her tiredly. âAnd heâs still not awake.â
âHey, kiddo,â she whispered, unable to bring her voice up any louder without it breaking. âWe miss you.â
Leaning forward, I rested my hand on Coleâs. âYou really think he can hear us?â My voice was thick with exhaustion and desperation.
